Team Teaching

Team teaching is a simple yet effective tool that I utilize in my classroom. This tool is not technology based, but the presentation medium can surely incorporate various technologies and accommodate various learning styles. Students work in teams to review their assigned topic(s). Additional research can be done if needed, then students present the information to the class using, game-based learning, PowerPoint, role play, document camera, white boards (located around the classroom) or any other medium that is suitable.

What is the benefit of this tool?
Team teaching is a great way to get students to work together and prepare the lesson so they can teach it to their class as they prefer. It helps to foster team work, camaraderie, and ways to deal with difference of opinion.

What is the disadvantage of this tool?
It is important to explain the requirements as well as expectations prior to starting. For example, each team should know what learning objectives they should cover when they teach the lesson. Additionally, I believe it is imperative that each team be given a time frame that they should stay within and not exceed (say 15-20 minutes). Lastly, as you walk around and stop by each team, this should help you to see if the teams are on track and meeting the expectations and requirements that were set forth at the start.

Is there a cost associated with this tool?
No!

Thoughts…
Students learn in a variety of different ways, some are more hands on learners while others prefer listening to the information. I believe that utilizing this method incorporates a variety of learning mediums. Additionally, it gets students out of their comfort zone and help them to build strong connections with their peers and beyond. It is important to note that the instructor must be a wise facilitator and can fill in the gaps of information as needed, but students should be able to pave the way for the discussions.
